Ugandan Afrobeat artist Ray G has once again shown that his musical journey is about more than just fame or fortune. Over the weekend, during the premiere of his latest EP, the singer opened up about his purpose, his faith, and how he views music as a calling, not just a career.
Speaking to fans and press at the launch event, Ray G explained what motivates him to continue making music, even in a competitive industry where many are driven by money and numbers.
“I don’t do music just for the money,” Ray G said. “I do it to share what God has put in me.”
For Ray G, music is more than a product to sell or a way to chase celebrity status. It is, first and foremost, a form of expression and a tool for impact. He believes artists should stay true to their message and not be caught up in competition or material rewards.
“Music is not about competing with others,” he continued. “It’s about creating something meaningful. You create your art, you share it, and in the process, you bring happiness to people. That’s what it means to me.”
Ray G’s new EP, which was launched with great excitement, continues to carry the same signature sound his fans have come to love—smooth Afrobeat rhythms mixed with heartfelt lyrics and cultural pride. But beyond the music, the artist wants people to understand the message behind every song.
“My songs always have a message,” he said. “Even when the beat makes you dance, I want the words to speak to your heart.”
Despite being recognized primarily as a regional artist from Western Uganda, Ray G’s reach has grown steadily over the years. Fans from all corners of the country now recognize his voice and lyrics, and he says he remains grateful for every bit of support.
“I’m very thankful to everyone who listens to my music—whether you’re in Mbarara, Kampala, Gulu, or anywhere else. The love I get from people across Uganda keeps me going,” he said.
When asked about how he balances passion with business, Ray G was open about the fact that while money does play a role, it is not the driving force behind his choices.
“Money comes in through bookings,” he explained. “You set a price, and the highest bidder gets the slot. That way, you don’t have to run around trying to be in several places at once. But even then, I stay focused on why I started in the first place.”
Ray G emphasized that staying grounded and faithful to one’s purpose is more important than chasing trends or trying to outshine other artists. He said that his faith has been a key part of his journey and continues to guide his music career.
“God gave me this gift, and I have to use it in the right way,” he said. “As long as I’m making music that touches lives, then I’m doing what I’m meant to do.”
Fans at the event echoed his sentiments, with many saying that Ray G’s music has helped them through difficult times or reminded them of home. For the artist, those stories mean more than any award or chart ranking.
As the new EP makes its way to streaming platforms and local airwaves, Ray G hopes listeners will not just enjoy the sound, but also connect with the heart behind it.
“Music should feed the soul,” he concluded. “If I can make you feel something real, then I’ve done my job.”
